Founded by Gail Johnson, Nkosi's Haven was officially opened on 14th April 1999 and was named in honour of her 12-year old foster son, Nkosi Johnson. Born HIV-positive, Nkosi Johnson was South Africa's longest surviving victim of AIDS, whose life was characterised by his brave fight for the rights of the HIV-positive.

In July 2000, Nkosi captured the hearts of millions of TV viewers when his address at the 13th International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa was televised worldwide. An excerpt from his speech reads: "Care for us and accept us - we are all human beings…Don't be afraid of us - we are all the same." On Friday 1st June Nkosi passed away.

The objective of Nkosi's Haven is to ensure that destitute HIV-Positive mothers, their children and orphans of HIV/AIDS parents have a safe, caring and dignified place to call home, equipped with acceptable living standards.

Nkosi's Haven at 23 Mitchell Street, Berea currently provides long-term and permanent shelter to:

  • 9 mothers with HIV / AIDS;
  • 51 children, 29 of which are orphans and 9 of which are infected.

Nkosi's Haven has pledged to all these mothers, if they wish, that their children will have continued permanent accommodation and support at Nkosi's Haven after they have passed on.

Completely reliant on financial assistance for its survival, Nkosi's Haven faces many daily challenges and currently, it is desperately in need of structural repair and maintenance. Broken and waterlogged floors are being held together with planks of wood. Approximately 30 kids share one bathroom, one toilet and one washing up sink in the kitchen, and many of the walls, doors, windows, fittings and fixtures are literally falling apart.

Lithotech (Pty) Ltd is proud to be sole sponsor for all building materials, plumbing and electrical components that are required to enable Nkosi's Haven to make much-needed alterations to its premises. These alterations will improve the living conditions of mothers, their children and other orphans whose home it is.

Lithotech has taken an active role and personal involvement in participating in this project.

Lithotech commends Nkosi's Haven as being a beacon of hope and an example of a dignified, safe and supportive environment for HIV mothers, their children and orphans. Considering the importance of the fight against HIV / AIDS, there is a continual need to create more of these environments that provide much-needed support for the victims of the AIDS pandemic.

This website shows Nkosi's Haven both before and after the building renovations, highlighting the positive outcome that Lithotech's contribution has made to this project. This site also offers an opportunity for companies and individuals to make donations to Nkosi's Haven, a section 21 non-profit charity organisation - thereby allowing the project to expand and support more infected and affected people.

It is our social responsibility, as companies and individuals, to participate in upliftment programs in our country.
